Italian street food

since 2015.

Everything started from the passion of Valeria and Federico, two young Italian backpackers, their love for true Italian food taste and everything they'd been missing from back home.

2015: The Taste of Italy was founded. The mission was to share good Italian food, that had probably never been tried before by the small community of Darwin’s northern suburbs. No great goals or ambitions, but simply the passion and love for food.

2015: Malak Marketplace. The first great opportunity came with the offer to have a stall at the newly started Malak Marketplace. After many brainstormings trying to find something original that could surprise the local community, they started serving Italian food once a week, under a gazebo and with a couple of folding tables—not a job, maybe a hobby, probably just a great passion.

For four years, Valeria, with the help of her now husband, tried different recipes and cuisines, always something new… Taralli, sausage panini, panzerotti, focaccia, arancini and many more.

2018: homemade dry pasta. The big turn came in 2018 with the idea of start making their own homemade dry pasta. It was a big hit considering The Taste of Italy’s small scale operations. The response from the public was fantastic, everyone loved it.

2019: The first Italian Festival. The success of the homemade pasta opened the opportunity to participate as food stall holder at the beloved Darwin Italian Festival. Even if the festival lasted a single day, this changed the future of The Taste of Italy forever.

The great success of her pasta pushed Valeria to believe in what she had accomplished so far. She understood that the passion to share good Italian food could soon be transformed into a full-time business.

2021: Mindil Beach Sunset Markets. Another significant chapter began… The chance to trade at Mindil Beach Sunset Markets every Thursday and Sunday during the Dry Season, definitely the biggest stage for food stallholders in the Top End. Since then, The Taste of Italy has been a significant player at major markets in the Darwin region, expanding also to the Palmerston Markets in the same year.

2023: 3/52 Mitchell St. In December 2023, the dream of opening a physical location turned into reality. The Taste of Italy, led by Valeria with the help of her husband and other family members, now serves authentic Italian fresh food from its premises in the heart of Darwin City.
